(More customer reviews)Item protects the lantern just fine when closed.And the cover is compact, taking up no more room than necessary. When the top is off it provides a solid stable base for the lantern.It also provides a small storage area for mantels and spare matches. My only real objection is that getting the lantern off and on the base. It is a real terror. And getting the cover off the base is just as difficult. I did get the carry case in pretty cold weather so Perhaps when the weather is warmer it will be easier, at least I hope so. All in all it is does just what it supposed too.

(More customer reviews)I bought this lantern because it was small and I like the bright light these lanterns throw, and the coleman hiss for nostalgic reasons. The size difference between this and the larger dual fuel one wasn't clear to me, so I ordered that by mistake first, and returned it at small cost. I like the idea of a case to protect it, anyway.
The first time I used this one, it worked fine. It doesn't throw a blinding light, but a fully satisfying one -- good for its size, I'm not disappointed. Packing it out in the case was the problem; it worked well to the car, but back to the house the bottom fell out, the lantern dropped and broke both the glass and the mantels. I think the sides of the plastic case got compressed in the car packing and that's all it takes to release the base. I'll replace the parts at unknown cost and I'll think twice before I carry it again.
